UK Number Plate Spacing Laws
Understanding the legal spacing requirements for UK registration plates ensures your plates stay road legal and DVLA compliant.
- 11mm gap between each character.
- 33mm space between the two groups of characters (e.g. between numbers and letters).
- 64mm high characters with 10mm stroke width.
- Only standard UK font (‘Charles Wright 2001’) is permitted.
- No altered spacing or fonts — these make a plate not road legal.
Plates that don’t follow DVLA spacing rules are classed as Show Plates and can’t be used on public roads.

Are your plates road legal?
Yes - all our standard, 3D Gel, and 4D 3mm plates are fully road legal. “Show Plates” (custom spacing or designs) can be ordered but are not road legal.

Do I need to provide documents?
For road-legal plates, yes, DVLA require proof of identity and entitlement to the registration. We'll contact you by email after purchase to verify these documents securely.

Yes! We offer fully customisable show plates for display or off-road use. These can include alternative spacing, borders, or badges, but won't include legal markings.
